Uddehika

What is attested

Copper coins naming the Uddehikas have been recovered from the Vidiśā and Bhilsa region of central India and are assigned to the first three centuries CE. As with the other corporate issues of the period, the legend names the people rather than a king.

Central India in this period lay between the Sātavāhana sphere to the south and the successors of the Śuṅgas to the north, and the political record for it is correspondingly thin. The Uddehika coins are evidence that the gap in the narrative sources conceals functioning local polities rather than an absence of them, which is most of what such issues can be asked to prove.
